Here is an up close and personal look at the structure which this Listrophorid mite uses to grasp onto a single shaft of hair on a mammal host. This is the head end of the mite.

Oh WOW! Those aren't the chelicera, are they?!
They're so weird looking... like teeth of a pair of tweezers.

You aren't an acarologist, are you? :o
Because if so, then I've found two here on deviant art within the span of a couple minutes! :XD:

I'm a general invert. geek my self.
I also live in New Hampshire & right now it's nearing the end of winter. The winter months for me are spent pacing in dreary resentment of the absence of fauna & trying to find what ones are still around.
Take a look:

HAHAHA! Scratch that question about whether you were an acarologist!
So what inspired you to get into huntin' mites?

I love pictures from SEM.
Is it hard to make a preparation?
I mean - do you need to use particles of heavy metals for contrast?

it takes time to prepare specimens, you have to replace any and all water in a specimen with CO2, place them delicately on a sticky stub and coat them in gold. The metal used depends on the resolution you want and the specimen.

I am an Acarologist, which means I study mites. Currently I am a grad student, and will one day have my own lab at a University. There is an SEM on campus, I give George the code to my grant and three hours later we have a couple hundred photos.

sounds interesting! wish you the best with your career. Kinda gives a person the heebee geebees seeing photos and knowing that there are mites like that all over us and our stuff. Another question if you dont mind me asking. What are the intentions of these studies of microscopic oranisims? I mean, is there a purpose or reason for the study? Just curious :)

well my research is on blood and tissue feeding mites associated with birds, and in particular the mites that live in the noses of birds. The point of the study is to determine what mites are on what birds in Canada, there has never been a survey of nasal mites in Canada, yet there has been similar surveys in other regions worldwide. These mites usually do not cause disease, but sometimes they do, there is one species of nasal mite that invade the lungs, airsacs, and even the body cavity resulting in death. We have that mite species in Canada. If we don't know what mites are here then we lack that area of knowledge when it comes to avian disease. People like birds, personally I like mites. But research for the sake of research doesn't get you grants.
